Pest Control and Termite Control Specialists - PH 1300 24 33 77Bugs and Bug Control SydneyBugs and Bug Control Sydney. There are many types of bugs in Sydney; Bed Bugs, Aphids, Cicadas, Scale Insects and the True Bugs which are all members of the insect group Himiptera. The most common thing all bugs have is a sucking beak like mouth parts that suck the juice out of plants and sometimes blood out of mammals.(bed bugs) There are approximately 60,000 species world wide of which 5600 species are known to be in Australia. lt is a common feature among the bugs for some form of secretion to be produced. This has varied waxy secretion of scale insects which forms a protective cover, the honey dew (sugary secretion) attractive to ants, and sometimes what is called a repugnatorial secretion which is repulsive to other insects and probably birds which might be predators. Many bugs have an odour which is typically "buggy" although the secretion is by no means uniform. The odour typical of bed bugs is an example. These fluids are of little consequence to humans but one case, the bronze orange bug (musgraveia sulciventris), deserves mention. This bug is found in coastal citrus growing areas from Sydney northward. It is primarily a pest of isolated trees rather than orchards and its presence can be recognised by the pervading odour alone. Both in the orange-coloured nymphal stages and in the bronzy brown adult stage this bug is capable of ejecting fluid, from glands situated laterally on the body, which falls like rain since the bugs are often above head height. This fluid produces a brown stain on the skin, sometimes with a burning sensation depending on the tenderness of the area involved. Effects are more pronounced under the nails, between the fingers or especially on the mouth. Nevertheless many people will experience no sensation at all. The most serious effects result from the entry of the fluid into the eye and on a number of occasions cases of this sort have been hospitalised and, although undocumented, there have been reasonably reliable statements that loss of sight has resulted in one or two cases in the Gosford area. The crusader bug (Mictis profana), occasionally seen in coastal New South Wales but more common in inland areas, is about 25 millimetres in length, dark brown in colour, with a conspicuous yellow X marking on its back. It is another plant- sucking bug feeding on wattles, eucalypts and cassias, but may also be found on inland citrus trees. This bug can discharge a jet of fluid causing pain and irritation if it reaches the eyes. If control of bugs in such situations is necessary, aspects of the horticulture involved and the host plant should be considered and appropriate agricultural chemicals used.
