Schedorhinotermes Intermedius Termites SydneyMy name is Gerard from Micropest Pest Control Sydney. I have been carrying out termite control treatments in New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia for over 35 years and I have no doubt whatsoever that the most difficult and destructive termites that I have come across in these three states definitely are the Schedorhinotermes termites species. The reason for this is that the Schedorhinotermes species of termites are very timid and if you disturb them enough, which is generally very little, they get up and they move to another part of the building and start eating, making them very hard to treat. Another reason why Schedorhinotermes termites species are such painful termites to deal with is that they can work within the timber quite easily causing extensive damage to your house without showing any signs or termite mud. In my experience, the Schedorhinotermes species do like a lot of moisture, therefore the upper and lower North Shore of Sydney are the most popular areas for this species of termites. This species of termites are found in South East Queensland and in New South Wales, east of the Great Dividing Range. They usually build nests in tree stumps, in living or dead trees, beneath dwellings or in places where wood has been buried or is in contact with the soil. This termite species can be identified by their tendency to gouge the affected wood and they seem to like nails in the construction. This species of termite is easily distinguished by what we call "major" and "minor" soldiers. Soldiers protect the nest from ants or any other predators. The two different castes of soldiers one been a major soldier, which is approximately 5 mm to 6 mm long, and a minor soldier, which is approximately 3 to 4 mm long, are both identified by the slightly darker head and mandibles. These are a very destructive species and can-do great damage to any structures made of wood or cellulose. The sighting of numerous numbers of the larger soldiers can indicate the presence of a large colony with potential for fast and serious destruction. They swarm four times a year during the spring and early summer. If flying termites are found or seen around your house I strongly recommend a termite inspection expediently which if termites are found an appropriate termite control treatment.
